ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Reports to: Board of Directors


SUMMARY
Act as the champion for the overall quality of all Art For People's artistic endeavors and ensure the vision is consistent amongst various independent projects. Provide leadership to position Art For People as a pioneer in performing arts. Develop a strategic plan to advance the company's mission and objectives and to promote relevancy to the community. Oversee all organization's artistic activities to insure creativity, efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources. Develop, lead, inspire, and mentor a team of lead teachers, performers and other artists.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.

Work hand-in hand with Art For People's Executive Director to develop a strategic plan to advance Art For People's mission and objectives and to promote relevancy to the community, ensure adequate revenue, and inspire growth as an organization.

2.

Manage and mentor the leadership skills of the Lead Artists as well as manage the skills of the Student and Performing Arts activities as a whole through the lead teachers and artists.

3.

Establish, maintain and communicate artistic policies as well as those instituted on an organization wide basis.

4.

Facilitate resolution to artistic and creative issues; project related issues as well as personnel conflicts.

5.

Communicate opinions and offer feedback during regular reviews of project art in order to ensure overall quality while also respecting the artistic lead's ownership of the art style on the specific project.

6.

Keep the teaching and performing arts staff current on industry standards and performing accordingly.

7.

Develop systems and procedures that will continue to increase the productivity of the teaching and art staff.

8.

Understand and request teaching and performing arts tools, equipment and facilities for use by art staff.

9.

Develop and provide internal and external training programs for the on-going development of the art staff.

10.

Maintain appropriate department staffing based on project development schedules.

11.

Maintain an ongoing schedule of teacher and artist assignments based on artistic skills, abilities and interests.

12.

Recruit talent through personal contacts and industry involvement.

13.

Maintain a ready pool of temporary contract artists to fill specific project needs.

14.

Approve organization operational procedures, policies, and standards.

15.

Represent the organization at community events, committee meetings, and at formal functions.

16.

Promote the organization to local, regional, national, and international constituencies.

17.

Present artistic activities report at Board of Director meetings.

18.

Direct artistic, education and creative development committees.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

1.

Commitment to the goals and philosophy of Art For People.

2.

Experience in artistic planning and execution. Knowledge of performing arts techniques, teaching and facility management. Skill in examining integration of artistic disciplines and coordinating multi-dimensional creative projects. Ability to develop project plans and manage resources. Must be an effective project leader, a clear communicator and consensus builder. Must have dynamic motivational and leadership abilities.

3.

Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate and interact with representatives at all levels in the artistic community, from novice to professional and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to motivate teams and simultaneously manage several projects.

4.

This is normally acquired through a combination of the completion of a Degree in Art or Performing Arts and ten years of experience in a leadership role for a large division or organization.

5.

Must have strong communication, diplomacy and negotiating skills.

6.

Ability to manage peoples workflow and resolve employee questions and conflicts.

7.

Strong organizational skills and follow through.

8.

Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule and travel.



WORKING CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work may require frequent weekend and evening work. Work may require frequent overnight travel.
